The Cost & Potential Savings of Electric Vehicles.

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) continue to gain momentum across the UK, as drivers look to reduce fuel costs, lower emissions whilst driving, and counter rising petrol and diesel prices. While in some cases electric vehicles can carry a higher upfront price, they can deliver meaningful savings over time through lower running costs, low cost charging options, reduced maintenance, and favourable tax treatment.

RUNNING COSTS.

For BMW BEVs, the biggest savings can come from running costs, with home charging typically offering the most economical rate depending on suppliers. In the UK, charging at home can be very cost-effective, especially when charging during off-peak hours. Real-world figures vary by tariff and supplier, but many BMW BEV owners see costs that are 10% - 20% less than a diesel vehicle*.

ELECTRIC CAR MAINTENANCE COSTS.

Unlike vehicles with a combustion engine, electric vehicles have fewer consumable parts. Therefore, there is no need to replace spark plugs, oil filters and cambelts, and there is also no need to change the oil during an inspection. Whilst there are still requirements for servicing, easy and cost-effective solutions like BMW Service Inclusive offer peace of mind and convenience. Our BMW Park Royal Service Centre provides professional support in every situation when a service or maintenance is required, and can provide more information on service plans available.

What's more BMW Proactive Care combines proactive and a preventative functions to identify needed actions for your BMW at an early stage. By continuously analysing real-time vehicle data, it detects service, maintenance, or repair requirements before issues arise, helping prevent breakdowns and unplanned interruptions. With this forward-thinking approach, Proactived Care delivers maximum comfort and peace of mind, keeping your BMW running smoothly and confidently.

ROAD TAX AND GOVERNMENT CHARGES.

In the UK, BEVs have benefited from reduced tax, and the total tax remains favourable for many electric BMW owners. As of recent updates, BEV taxation has changed, however, electric vehicles generally remain economical on annual costs than many petrol or performance variants when considering total cost of ownership.

Our BMW Park Lane team offers comprehensive guidance on total cost of ownership for its BEVs, including current VED considerations, company car tax implications, and qualifying reliefs where applicable.

CONGESTION CHARGES AND CLEAN AIR ZONES.

The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) came into operations in 2019. ULEZ was introduced to improve air quality by discouraging drivers with unsuitable vehicles from entering the most polluted areas of London.

Since 2019, ULEZ has expanded across all London boroughs. If you make a short trip inside the ULEZ zones using a vehicle that doesn't meet the ULEZ emission standards, you need to pay a daily charge, this also includes residents within the ULEZ zone. However, all BMW vehicles are ULEZ compliant, and you do not need to pay the ULEZ charge if you are parked inside the zone and don't drive.

A Congestion Charge is a daily fee charged for driving a vehicle within Central London during set hours. The government introduced this to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality in the city centre. All vehicles, including BEVs must pay the Congestion Charge if you drive within the Congestion Charging Zone during the charging times. BEVs pay the daily charge of £18. However, there is a 25% discount on the daily charge for electric cars registered on Auto Pay, the discounted charge will not apply**.

*ULEZ and Congestion Charge are subject to change.

BMW ELECTRIC WARRANTY.

BMW provides battery warranties, including coverage for degradation, which helps preserve resale value and post-warranty costs. The BMW Electric Warranty offers three years unlimited mileage cover from date of first registration. The warranty for your BMW electric vehicle also includes BMW Roadside Assistance and protection for the high voltage battery failure, or from excessive loss of battery capacity for up to eight years from first registration or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first†.
