IS AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE WORTH OWNING IN LONDON.
The biggest appeal for many is the potential for lower running costs, although actual savings depend on factors like charging habits, electricty prices, and vehicle usage. Home chargging is often cheaper, particularly if you take advantage of ‘off-peak’ periods; usually at night, which is an ideal time to charge your electric car for the morning. Costs and savings will vary by energy provider, and some suppliers offer exclusive EV or off-peak tariffs specifically designed for home charging. EVs also have fewer moving parts, which can mean lower maintenance costs over time.
Beyond financial savings, electric vehicles deliver smooth, quiet, and responsive acceleration thanks to instant torque.
UNDERSTANDING ELECTRIC RANGE IN THE UK.
One of the first questions potential buyers ask is about the car range on electric BMWs.
Many popular EV models now offer up to around 300 miles of official range on a full charge. The BMW iX3 raises the bar for fully electric vehicles, with an advertised range of up to 500 miles on a full battery†. With a maximum charging power of 400kW, the BMW iX3 can gain approximately 309 – 372 miles of additional range in just 10 minutes under optimal conditions*.
It’s important to remember that real-world range can differ. Factors affecting range can include cold weather, motorway speeds, vehicle load, use of heating and air conditioning, and driving style.
TACKLING RANGE ANXIETY.
Range anxiety tends to fade as you learn your car and the charging network. BMW’s in‑car maps and companion app (My BMW App) work together to give you all the information you need to plan journeys with confidence.
The navigation system shows compatible charging stations along your route and incorporates them into live route planning, so you can see suggested stops and expected charging times. BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant also supports hands‑free range checks, just say “Hey BMW” to hear your current battery level and to locate nearby chargers.
Public networks have grown significantly in London with rapid chargers in residential streets and at key destinations, including car parks.
LONG DISTANCE DRIVING IN THE UK.
EVs are well-suited for long journeys with frequent stops for rapid charging. The BMW iX3, for example, can recharge from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes*. We recommend the battery is charged to 80% to help optimise the health and life of your battery.
WHY EVs EXCEL IN CITY DRIVING.
EVs truly shine in city driving. Regenerative braking recovers energy, reduces brake wear, and boosts efficiency in start-stop traffic. Additional benefits include zero tailpipe emissions whilst driving, smooth acceleration, potential for reduced running csots, and easier access to some low-emission zone.

† The BMW iX3 is a battery electric vehicle requiring mains electricity for charging. WLTP electric range for the new BMW iX3 model range: 421 to 500 miles. Whilst we recommend the battery is charged to 80% to help optimise the health and life of your battery, the electric range figure shown is the WLTP figure after the battery had been fully charged to 100%. Model shown is the BMW iX3 50 xDrive M Sport with up to 492 mile range. WLTP figures are shown for comparability purposes. Only compare fuel consumption, CO2 and electric range figures with other cars tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including the starting charge of the battery, accessories fitted (post registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load.
*The range after 10 minutes High-Power-Charging was determined according to ISO12906 in the WLTP cycle. This, as well as the charging performance depend on vehicle equipment, the state of charge and health of the battery, battery temperature, individual driving profile, use of auxiliary users, ambient temperature, and the charging power provided at the charging station. High speed public charging stations are currently available in limited numbers in the UK, most commonly found in high traffic areas such as motorway service stations. Availability continues to grow and more information of charger locations and type can be found at: https://bmw-public-charging.com/web/en/bmw-gb/map. Use of AC charging stations for your regular charging and less frequent use of DC fast charging stations will help optimise the health and life of your battery.
