WHAT IS AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE AND HOW DO ELECTRIC CARS WORK.
A Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) runs exclusively on electricity, propelled by an electric motor. It has no internal combustion energy. Energy is stored in a high-voltage battery and delivered to the motor, which powers the wheels. Electric motors provide immediate torque, enabling smooth, decisive acceleration and enabling a compact, simplified drivetain. With a BEV, charging happens at your convenience, at home or growing network of public charging points across the UK.
HOW TO CHARGE AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE.
- Home Charging - Every BMW BEV uses Pod Point Home Charger that provides 3x faster charging than your standard three-pin plug. This cable can be used with any domestic or industrial plug socket, convenient for an at home charging helping you maximise your day
- Workplace Charging - Many employers are expanding their charging facitilies as part of employee benefits. Plug in at the start of the day and depart with a fully charged vehicle for the commute home
- Public Charging - For easy charging on the move, you have access to a growing network of over 116,052 EV chargers across the UK, and this will continue to grow*
TYPES OF CHARGING SPEEDS.
- Slow (3-6kW) - Usually used for home for overnight charging and using a standard domestic three-pin plug
- Fast (7-22kW) - Commonly found at workplaces, supermarkets, and public car parks; can typically charge a vehicle in roughly 4-6 hours, depending on the battery size
- Rapid (43+ kW) - Used for long journeys at motorway service stations and dedicated charging hubs, enabling much quicker top-ups
EV CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE ACROSS LONDON.
London sustains one of Europe's most advanced EV charging networks, supported by strong policy and backing and high adoption. The capital leads the UK in charger density, as of 1 January 2026, there were 116,052 chargers across the UK*, and the number is increasing.
Charging points span on-street resident chargers, destination chargers, and rapid charging hubs. Major networks operate thousands of points across borough, ensuring access for residents without private driveways and for urban commuters alike.
BMW BEV cars excel in London because:
- A broad mix of on-street, destination, and rapid chargers keep journeys predictable and convenient
- BMW Charging integrates with a wide network, backed by transparent pricing and unified payment through the My BMW App
- Public fast charging reduces range anxiety and extends the ability to plan longer city and regional trips with confidence.
